Munny Young Carl from Pixar Up

munny carl1It is my first custom munny I made. It was customized before Rocky and Shrek last month. I used mini munny so I couldn’t enter to competition with this one. It is a young  version of Carl from Disney/Pixar movie Up. I sculpted his hat with epoxy putty, added shorts and shoes. Glasses are made of laser cut plywood.  This project started my addiction to toy customization. You can try it yourself!

Rocky Munny for kidrobot contest

munny rocky1
This is a custom munny I made for kidrobot’s munny competition. I wanted to sculpt a lot with this one. Original toy’s hand reminded me boxing gloves so I started to think about boxing stars. The first thing on my mind was Rocky Balboa, one of the heroes of my childhood :) I did some research and found this brilliant caricature painted by Sebastian Kruger. I imediatelly saw the Sylwester’s face on munnys head. I needed to extend it verticaly and create huge jaw using munnys ears as a base. It looked like a challenge, so I decided to do it. Here you can see some progress photos.
munny rocky2
The body is from 7 inches DIY toy, but the head is taken from  mini munny. All figure measures 25 cm. Its painted with spray paints and airbrushed acrylics.

munny rocky3UPDATE 15 JULY 2010:  This little guy won second place in “best movie event reenactment” category at Munny Munth Contest !!! Thanks for all who voters, supporters and contestants. You chan check other winning entries here

Russell figurine

RussellThis is second character I sculpted to fit the 1:48 dollhouse I made before. He is made of epoxy putty and painted with acrylics. He is 28mm tall. I used Hot Toys figure as reference, but I am not planning to make his rucksack, he wouldnt be able to stand on his legs then. My next figurine is Ellie. She is already sculpted and waiting for colours, I will post it in few days so visit soon ;)

Carl Fredricksen figurine

carl3Few photos of my recent weekend project. This is a 33mm tall figurine of Carl Fredricksen from Disney/Pixar animation “Up” made in scale 1:48 to match the dollhouse I made recently. I sculpted it in two parts epoxy putty, you can buy it in every hardware store. I used the one with 5 minutes working time, it means I had to work fast and on small areas, and I could quickly make corrections with sharp knife. Glasses are made of 0.25mm styrene. All is painted with acrylic paints from Valleyo and Games Workshop range of colours and later sprayed with matt varnish. It was fun to make it.

carl wipIf you are looking to buy a figurine of Carl or Russel, I would recommend collectible vinyl toy from Hot Toys. If you need something cheap for your child, I found good quality little figurines from german producer Bullyland.

Into House

Jyrki Tasa_1

This is the model of house designed by finis architect Jyrki Tasa. I saw this building in many magazines and books. I like its simple form and use of wood, steel and glass.

Jyrki Tasa_2

The model is in scale 1:100. Base is 400x400mm. I used balsa, cardboart, clear styrene and plaster to form the rocks.  The window frames are made of metalic stickers from art&hobby shop. My favourite part of this model is the bottom side of the roof with its timber beams.

Jubilee Church

Jubilee Church 1

First model I would like to present you is Richard Meier’s Jubilee Church I made last year. Plan-form and section are extremely clear. Three circles of equal radius create three concrete shells to the south and together with a thick spine wall to the north. The west (altar) and east (organ) walls are light glazing, surrounding the bright, white set pieces for the cross and organ respectively. Natural light is the major theme, with skylights between each shell and over the main space, creating ever changing patterns within. In a contrasting, plain L plan around a sunken courtyard, is the community centre, on four levels. The centre is separated from the main church by a linear top-lit atrium.

Jubilee Church 2

The whole model is hand cut from styrene. That was before I bought my laser plotter. The shells were vacuum formed or rather pushed on my clay mould I prepared especially for that. At the beginning I was going to laminate it with glass fibre and resin, but I decided that styrene will be easier to cut later. Each shell contains 2 sheets of formed styrene and few stripes in the middle to add the necessary thickness. Then I sanded the edges and engraved the mesh of panels divisions. The rest is pretty straight forward. The most time consuming was engraving (panels, paving and railings).

Jubilee Church 3

Everything is lit with around 40 LEDs and it serves as the “mood” light in my bedroom ;) It better than “lava lamp”.
