Here is series of sculptures I made inspired by 1951 Disney classic animation Alice in Wonderland. It was thirteenth in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series, made under the supervision of Walt Disney himself. This film and its animation are often regarded as some of the finest work in Disney studio history. There is the scene in the Tulgey Wood where she encounters unusual inhabitants, such as Pencil Birds, an Accordion Owl, Umbrella Vultures, Horn Ducks, Drum Frogs, and Shovel Birds. I started with Hammer Bird and Horn Duck with plans to add more creatures to the collection
I made them using my 3d printer. I prepared the 3d files of Horn Duck in Google Sketchup and body of Hammer Bird sculpted digitally in Sculptris. It was later sanded smooth and some details reworked by hand. I made molds and created very limited edition of the figures. If you want one, write me the comment below this post.
This is third bird type based on Disney Alice in Wonderland animated movie. It is massive 915mm tall, modeled in Sculptris and 3d printed in 14 pieces. Each piece took between 4 and 7 hours to print and used up to 28m of PLA plastic. The total print used about 1kg of plastic. I used Meshmixer to hollow and later cut my model into pieces. I glued them with superglue and poured rigid polyurethane foam inside to make it strong and durable while sanding. For the initial pass, I used the drill with small round attachment followed by mouse sander. I then filled the remaining holes with car body filler and sand it again. At this stage, I only used mouse sander and later smoothed by hand. I sprayed few layers of filler primer and sand it again using fine sandpaper. Repeat the process few times, filling small holes and imperfections with Tamiya putty. At the end, I sprayed with grey and white gloss primer and had it ready for molding.
The whole figure is broken into 5 pieces so the mold will be easier to move while roto-casting by hand to make the hollow casts to save on weight and material. Head, neck and body are assembled, joints filled and sanded before priming and final paint job. Legs are separate for easier painting and shipping. They are keyed and can be easily attached with superglue and should create a strong bond.
I made 3 color versions just like in the movie. I am now working on hedgehog figure so some day I may release few copies, if you are interested, just drop me a line in comments below.
Oyster Babies Alice in Wonderland
Alice in wonderland clam babies were another figure set I decided to build based on Alice in Wonderland theme. It was again sculpted digitally and 3d printed, this time on resin printer which saved me a lot on sanding. I cast few copies in solid resin and painted them with spray paints. They are nice size and weight, baby is 13cm tall.
It is probably the cutest figure I made so far.
Alice in Wonderland Caterpillars
Next project on the Alice in Wonderland theme was Dogerpillar as seen in very short scene in the movie. This time I wanted to practice hand sculpting and made my prototype using epoxy putty. It was fun to make and I did not any figurine on the market based on this character so I had to make it.
When I completed the figurine and posted it on Instagram, it was very well received. I decided to build him a companion piece. Based on survey among my Instagram friends I went with angry cat version as seen in the movie. Lack of the figures ready to buy made it even more interesting.
He was again sculpted by hand. I broke it to multiple pieces to separate each color for easier painting. It was molded and cast in resin and I very few people will have a chance to own it in their collections.
Alice in Wonderland Frogs
If you like them, you can buy them from me on my Instagram, just send me DM
