If you follow my model building adventure you can probably guess that I love the ‘Up’ movie from Pixar. My interest in modelmaking restarted with my first miniature of Carl’s and Ellie’s house. I also started sculpting UP movie characters with child version of Carl and Ellie customized from Kidrobot Munny vinyl toy. I later built doll house and tiny figurines of Carl, Ellie and Russell to fit the house. I always wanted to add Kevin from Up and Dug . When I did it there were very little collectibles available based on this franchise so I had to build them on my own. Few years later the toy companies filled this gap but I still could not find baby Kevin figure I liked. I wanted him to be full scale bird, cute and cuddly but not a plush toy. I already had materials and some experience with building Tiki Room Macaws from Disneyland. I also got request to build one of the kind Kevin engagement ring box. When all this things aligned, I was very excited to make it a new project.
Kevin is a colorful and large bird in the animated movie “Up,” produced and released in 2009 by Pixar Animation Studios, and it plays a significant role in the adventure of the main characters. In the movie, Kevin is initially mistaken for a male bird due to its appearance and the colorful plumage. However, as the story progresses, it’s revealed that Kevin from UP is actually a female bird. In the final frames of the film, a heartwarming sight unfolds as Kevin’s babies make their appear alongside their devoted mother. These three cute little birds bear a striking resemblance to the vibrant and colorful Kevin. The scene is short and fun as she playfully returns Carl’s cane, while her 3 miniature baby Kevins mimic the gesture by spitting out tennis balls.
How Did I make Real Size Baby Kevin statue
I started with gathering all the images I could find and started working. I sculpted him digitally using app called Nomad Sculpt using my android tablet. I scaled the character based on real object, tennis ball which was next to them on reference picture.
I have lots of extra white fake fur I bought for my parrots project. I knew I will have few challenges to face with all the colors of fur and they happened as I tested on first copy. I started with single white piece I glued to the figure and tried to paint it with acrylics. I was not patient enough to wait until each color dried so they mixed together and blue made all other colors look dirty. I love the white and fluffy version so here is photo of this stage for your enjoyment.
I removed parts and started second attempt from scratch. I prepared patterns and painted each color separately. I colored them with acrylics using big brush and after they dried, I comb them to untangle hair. I had to repeat this process few times to get the vibrant color. I later glued the pieces to the 3d printed body and trim hair with scissors. The head was printed in resin and painted with Vallejo acrylics using airbrush to shade the beak part.
This little guy quickly became most popular creature on my Instagram page and I got few requests. I built very limited edition of this figure. If you are interested in adopting one, write me an email or DM me on Instagram and I will contact you and put you on my waiting list.
Kevin Engagement Ring Box
Building of this character was inspired by the customer who wanted Kevin from Up the movie as a personalized engagement ring box. Kevin in Up movie has long neck what would make it too big or too fragile for this purpose. I proposed the child version instead and we went with this idea.
Baby Kevin as engagement ring box worked better because he could be small enough to hide in the pocket and his tiny belly was nice compartment to hide the ring. If you want one, send me a message, I would like to repeat this cool project. It also greatly complement my other very popular models on wedding related websites like Up House ring box and Ellie Adventure book ring box I made before.
