Here is the new engagement ring box I created for Mike from Santa Monica for his beautiful girlfriend Sarah. He came to me with an idea of merging her favorite Disney character Stitch and crate from game Destiny2. I liked this idea and few challenges it will cause, so I said yes and decided to build it. It is all made from scratch. I sculpted the character digitally and 3d printed.
The 3d model was built using Sculptris. Many separate elements were merged using Meshmixer. I also cut them there for few, easy to print and assemble parts. All were printed in ABS plastic for easier sanding and polishing. I smoothed them with a sander and painted few times with acetone. That dissolves the plastic and add some strength by gluing and smoothing the layers. I then used lots of filler and primer with few passes of sanding to bring the surface to smooth finish. The main color is Ultramarine Blue primer from Army Painter series of color primers. They give great finish and base for acrylic paints. The light blue and black are applied with brushes and I used my favorite Vallejo paints for that.
The crate was designed in Sketchup. I put 3 white LEDs inside and tiny potentiometer inside panel. It lights up when the top slides open. The button battery is fixed at the bottom with on/off switch. I am very happy with this design. It is small, compact and it works. It was one of these things I assumed will cause some troubles when I started the project, but it went smooth. The ring dictated the size of the crate, and that scaled the figure up. At the end, we settled at the approx 20cm figure. It feels great to hold something of this size.
LEDs are hidden under translucent ring holder. I made it using silicone. I mixed it with blue acrylic paint and diced when it dried. I used some fresh silicone to glue little pieces together, using a coin as a placeholder for the ring. It holds the ring nicely, and let the light go through.
Stitch Engagement Ring Box Version 2
It was one of the favorite projects I made recently. I looked at it for few days wanting to keep it 🙂 I took some photos and the finished model was shipped to its new owner. From what I know, it was gifted to Sarah and she said yes! If you are reading it, I wish you both great future together! I am looking forward to seeing photos of the engagement or things you will make with the figure. From what I saw, Mike is an amazing photographer.
Since this model spread over internet I got many requests for building another. I used my original files as start and modified them to create smaller figurine which I can build for you if you want it. Just send me message through comment section below or through Instagram. There will be very small number of them made so it will be rare collectible for few lucky couples.
Here is something I wanted to try. I modified the Stitch to create new character Angel. She is going to be one of the kind and is available for purchase. All of the ring boxes I created so far, can be seen in short 3 minutes clip below. Please support me with your likes and comments under the video. Thank you!
